Four monitoring wells will be installed along the perimeter of the excavation. Each of the wells will be completed at a depth of 15 feet below ground surface from the surface grade. Therefore, a GeoProbe direct push drill rig will be sufficient to install the monitoring wells. The three wells located along the permieter of the excavation will be installed using a Geoprobe direct-push drill rig. The Geoprobe uses a hydraulic hammer to push a macrocore lined steel rod with a polyethylene sleeve into the ground in four-foot increments. The macrocore is then withdrawn from the ground and the sleeve removed containing a relatively undisturbed soil core. The sleeve is cut open allowing examination and sampling of soil from the core sample. The purpose of this investigation is to characterize groundwater only, therefore soil samples will not be submitted for laboratory analysis. The wells will be completed as two-inch diameter PVC wells, with five feet of 0.020-inch machine slot screen and PVC casing. For each monitoring well, filter sand will be placed in the annulus around the well screen and added until it is to two feet above the screen. A two-foot thick low permeability seal constructed of hydrated medium bentonite chips will then be placed from the top of the sand. The medium bentonite chips will be hydrated with potable water as it is poured into the annulus around the well, thereby ensuring that all bentonite is properly hydrated. Bentonite powder and portland cement slurry with a 60 to 40 mix ratio 3 to 1 solid to water will then be placed to the surface. Each well will be a flush-mounted installation using a 5-inch diameter cover with a galvanized steel sleeve. Cement will be placed around and at the base of the cover to prevent surface water infiltration. After the cement has cured, the monitoring well will be developed.
